A Legacy of Excellence

Established in 1960, Manitoba's Master Angler Program is the oldest of its kind in North America. What began as a modest registry recognizing just seven species has grown into a prestigious angling institution, celebrating hundreds of thousands of trophy catches across 30 qualifying species. When you submit a catch to the Master Angler database, you aren't just logging a fish, you are earning your place in Manitoba's rich angling history.

Fish-First: Protecting Manitoba's Fisheries

The future of our world-class fisheries relies on ethical harvesting and conservation-led angling. Today, we are proud to report that more than 95% of all Master Angler entries are successfully caught and released, a massive leap from 65% when the program first began tracking release rates in 1991.

To celebrate this overwhelming commitment to sustainability, anglers who successfully release a qualifying trophy fish earn the exclusive Catch-and-Released badge. This one-time award is a badge of honor, symbolizing your dedication to keeping our fisheries thriving for the next generation.

Program Integrity

The prestige of a Master Angler award lies entirely in the integrity of the catch. To protect the legacy of North America's oldest program, all submissions are subject to rigorous review.

All participants are expected to be familiar with the Master Angler Program Rules which are strictly enforced through the Master Angler Non-Compliance Policy. These standards ensure that every certificate and badge awarded carries the true weight of a Master Angler achievement.

Join the Master Angler Program

Whether you are a seasoned angler adding to your record or submitting a young angler's first big catch to the Li'l Angler Program, we want to celebrate your success. Every approved catch is honored with an official certificate to mark your achievement, and your first qualifying catch of each species earns you a commemorative pin.

To ensure your submission qualifies, please review our core entry requirements:

  • Fish must be caught in Manitoba using active rod-and-reel angling during the official open season for that specific waterbody.
  • Submissions must be logged digitally through the Master Angler website or mobile app within one year of the catch.
  • You must provide the accurate species, length, date and the specific name of the body of water.
  • You must include a horizontal photo of the entire fish on a flat surface, showing the full length from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail against a clear ruler, measuring tape, or bump board.
  • To protect our resources, photos showing improper handling (such as vertical gill, eye, weigh scale or stringer holds) will be rejected. Photos must not be digitally altered, and fish must not show signs of severe injury.
